There’s an auditory component of spending time on a glacier that’s unexpected. The sound of running water is constant as the melting ice carves a highway system of runoff all around and under you. At the same time there’s a regular groaning and cracking of shifting ice, occasionally interrupted by giant pieces falling off. Finally, if you’re up there long enough, you’re sure to hear some icefalls; massive avalanches of ice which sound just like thunder.
