What Does Your Company Stand For?
Yvon Chouinard’s been my business hero for as long as I can remember. Let My People Go Surfing is one of my favorite books of all time (not favorite “business” books, but favorite books, period). The way Patagonia has gone about building a global brand while staying true to the values that Yvon founded the company upon is so inspiring to me.
It’s therefore no surprise (to me) that his company just announced Patagonia Action Works, another innovative idea from the brand that’s become the conscience of the outdoor industry. Action Works gives people the tools to effect environmental protection in their local communities, other than screaming into the void on twitter. The site allows you to easily find issues that you’re passionate about and the steps to use your voice to make a difference. Watch this two minute video about Action Works. I love when Yvon says “Patagonia’s reason for existence is to force government and corporations to take action in solving our environmental problems.” Wow that’s powerful, but then again, Patagonia’s never been a shrinking violet when it comes to these issues.
At Techstars, diversity and inclusion is near and dear to everyone who works here; it’s what we stand for. We never stop talking about it internally and we’ve established a number of initiatives around it. We even started a foundation which focuses on increasing diversity in entrepreneurship.
